Position Summary

The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s new Manhattanville campus.

The Center for Theoretical Neuroscience within the Zuckerman Institute Columbia University is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Research Assistant for Dr. Ken Miller. This is a part-time and grant funded position.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of the PI: collect data on large scale populations of simultaneously recorded neurons in the mammalian brain.
  • Perform data collection of neural activity in the visual cortex of a behaving mouse.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Six months of related experience required
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills and be familiar with MATLAB and/or Python. The research project is purely computational and will include preprocessing data and high level data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrolled in upper-class undergraduate studies or Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Neuroscience, Biology, or a related discipline.”
  • A candidate building skills prior to graduate or medical school might find this position productive and rewarding. Proficiency with programming is required.”

They must be flexible in nature and exhibit a willingness to learn new techniques and function in a fast-paced and changing work environment. They must possess strong organizational skills, keep excellent notes, show sound judgment, and have a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation as well as the ability to work independently within a diverse and dynamic team environment
