RESEARCH SPECIALIST

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, clinics, a preschool, a brain imaging center, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.
This position will work within the Alexander Disease Laboratory. Research focuses on the effects of astrocyte pathology in the central nervous system with particular emphasis on models of Alexander disease (see below for more information). The Research Specialist will manage rodent model inventory and breeding, and depending on qualifications, perform drug administration protocols, tissue collection and processing, and/or molecular, histological, and behavioral analyses. The position also requires general lab maintenance duties, detailed record keeping, and assisting with regulatory compliance.

• 50% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
• 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
• 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
• 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
• 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
• 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
• 15% Manages animal inventory and production for experiments and maintenance of transgenic rodents
• 5% Assists with laboratory operations and compliance, including implementation of laboratory safety protocols and institutional animal care and use protocols, and shipping samples to other laboratories

Required
Bachelor’s Degree
Preferably in Biological Field.

Qualified candidates will have the following required experiences:
– At least one year of laboratory work experience.
– Experience working with rodents in a laboratory setting.
Well-qualified candidates will have the following preferred experiences:
– Experience with managing transgenic rodent inventory and production.
– Experience with Rodent behavior tests.
– Experience with tissue collection and processing.
– Experience with histological techniques, microscopy, and image analysis.
– Experience with stereotaxic injections.
– Experience with molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, protein extraction, quantitative PCR, western blotting, and ELISA.

Full Time: 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Must complete HIPAA and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually thereafter within 5 days of notification.
