Performs a variety of independent laboratory work and experiments such as determining experimental protocols and preparation of specimens and cultures. Prepares reports of findings subsequent to compilation and analyzation. Oversees specimen inventory. Develops documentation for publication; crafts manuscripts and grant proposals.

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a qualified Research Specialist. Highly desired skills and experience include:

– Experience with analytical instruments and techniques, NMR, IR, MS, LC-MS, HRMS, and other applicable spectroscopic techniques preferred.
– The ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision, providing guidance to other lab members, performing independent analysis, and interacting with researchers external to the group and the University.
– Chemistry or biology lab techniques, ability to analyze, interpret and report results. Good communication skills, organizational and inventory skills, and willingness to provide administrative report to Dr. Wipf.
– The ability to train and support new laboratory staff and undergraduate/graduate researchers in Wipf group on standard operating procedures and safety protocols. Responsible for ensuring that all lab members adhere to appropriate guidelines.
– Incumbent must interact with faculty as well as other research specialists, post-docs, students, and on a daily basis with Dr. Wipf.
– Incumbent will also have regular contact with researchers outside the area/department. Communications with external representatives may be necessary to fulfill Dr. Wipf’s administrative needs.

Bench laboratory science requires regular interaction with chemicals and maintaining compound inventory. Incumbent will be responsible for placing chemical orders for the group and maintain an updated inventory of chemicals, as well as dispense chemical samples for shipping according to Dr. Wipf’s instructions. Accuracy in balance operations and systematic record keeping are required.

BS degree in Chemistry or Biology, or another relevant natural science area, or a minor in one of these areas are preferred.

Essential Functions The essential functions of this position are to work efficiently with minimal supervision while adhering to laboratory guidelines, provide guidance to other lab members, perform independent analysis, ordering and maintaining the inventory, and communicating well with both internal lab and department members as well as external representatives.
Physical Effort Incumbent must stand for extended periods of time at the bench for 2-5 hours a day. Must use a computer and manipulate specialized scientific equipment.
