Job Summary:

This is a Research Specialist position in the Immunology Service Unit of the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC). The successful applicant will contribute to research investigating antibody and cell-mediated immune responses to viral pathogens, including the human and simian immunodeficiency viruses (HIV and SIV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and Zika virus. Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited, to planning and performing immunologic assays for antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), virus neutralization, and T cell responses. Laboratory techniques will involve cell culture, lymphocyte isolation from peripheral blood and tissues, flow cytometry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and DNA sequencing. Additional duties will include data analysis, maintaining a complete and well organized laboratory notebook, contributing to general lab maintenance, and training new personnel. BL-3 training and certification will be completed upon hire.

Responsibilities: Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 60% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 5% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Required
Bachelor’s Degree in biological science, cell biology, immunology, or relatable field

Qualifications:

Although previous non-classroom laboratory experience is preferred, recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to applicants with a strong background in immunology, virology or molecular biology with previous cell culture and/or flow cytometry experience. Excellent communication skills, mature work habits, a desire to learn, and the ability to work independently in a team environment are expected.

The WNPRC is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC’s mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public.
