Research Sonographer

The Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health are looking to recruit a Research Sonographer to work on the OxPLUS Study. The post is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in acquiring experience of research in a world-class academic unit (see http://www.wrh.ox.ac.uk).

The research and ultrasound scanning will support a study (OxPLUS) which is funded by a prestigious Sir Jules Thorn Translational Medicine Grant. OxPLUS aims to recruit 3500 women to have a first trimester 3D placental ultrasound scan at the time of their routine screening scan. This study will assess both the clinical utility of the novel tool and the economic advantages it may provide to the NHS. The successful candidate will work within an exciting MDT made up of clinicians, midwives and biomedical engineers.  

The successful candidate will join a highly motivated interdisciplinary team of bio-medical engineers and clinical researchers working on the OxPLUS study. They will work closely with the OxPLUS clinical fellow to design and facilitate training of the NHS sonographers in the new 3D technique as well as first trimester uterine artery metrics. They will be responsible for supporting with the data collection as well as undertaking routine obstetric scans to support the NHS ultrasound department (ensuring their sonographic skills are maintained). They will be expected to be actively involved in the study with the potential to get involved in development of teaching packages and writing clinical publications (abstracts and journal articles). 

The post holder’s key duties will involve learning and becoming proficient in the technique required to collect 3D-PD ultrasound volumes of the placenta, teaching this technique to the departmental sonographers whilst providing ongoing sonographic support to the NHS unit and contributing to data collection.  

The suitable candidate must have a Certificate/Diploma (as appropriate) in Medical Ultrasound (CMU/DMU) or Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound (PGCert.MU) with qualifications relevant to obstetric scanning, up to date ICH GCP training or willingness to undertake training and demonstrable prior experience in obstetric ultrasound. A self-motivated attitude and excellent communication are also essential for this role. 

The post is offered on a full-time basis and is fixed term for 2 years. We are looking for the post holder to start as soon as possible.
