Research Software Engineer

Good software development is rapidly becoming a crucial part of high-quality research. Research software engineers play a major role in enhancing the university’s capability and expertise in developing.

What will you be doing?

You are an expert in software development and you will spend most of your time developing research software in collaboration with research groups within the university’s faculties. Projects are varied and can include topics such as developing reproducible analysis workflows, designing Graphical User Interfaces, optimizing software performance, or setting up computing infrastructure. These specific periods of work are likely to last between three and nine months per project, with the possibility of working on more than one project at the same time.

You will also provide relevant training, such as software carpentry workshops, for doctoral students and researchers and act as a mentor.

The function is part of the TU Delft open science community and you will be sharing the latest developments in the field of research software engineering, and help set up, maintain and disseminate relevant policies and guidelines.

Within the IT Innovation department, we support researchers, teachers and students in understanding and applying IT in the best possible way. We work closely with the Shared Service Center ICT to convert promising technologies into campus-wide services. We also work closely with the Data Stewards, the Library and the Faculty IT Managers to identify new opportunities for supporting our researchers through IT.

Members of the IT Innovation department contribute to all four pillars of research software engineering: Software Development, Community, Training and Policy.

Digital Competence Centre – Virtual team

At TU Delft, the Open Science Programme is committed to making open research and education a daily practice, and the Digital Competence Centre (DCC) is part of that commitment. The DCC consists of research software engineers and data managers.

The DCC provides researchers with IT skills, good practices and toolsets required for implementing the ‘FAIR’ principles into any research project and helps researchers reach their software development goals. The acronym of ‘FAIR’, stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

As an expert in Research Software Engineering you have:

• A master’s degree, preferably in an academic discipline relevant to those studied at TU Delft
• Relevant experience in software development in a research environment
• A good understanding of the role of software in contemporary research
• Experience with modern scientific programming languages, such as Python, R, Matlab, C
• Relevant skills for developing and documenting modular, reusable and robust software solutions
• An understanding of, or experience in applying software engineering skills in AI workflows
• Experience in Open Source development workflows
• Good people and communication skills, with a good level of English

Competences

The following competences are required for functioning as a Research Software Engineer in our environment:

• You have excellent collaboration skills in an academic setting and are able to work independently
• You have a structured, curious and innovative attitude
• You are able to define your own work tasks taking into account the balance between quality and efficiency (understand what is ‘good enough’)
• You have a proactive disposition and are willing to challenge our current working methods
• You are willing to learn about and engage with a variety of types of software and research projects

• Duration of contract is 1 year with prospect of permanent.
• A job of 40 hours per week.
• The maximum salary is € 5.439 (according to the VSNU salary scale) and will depend on your meeting the stated requirements and your current working experience
• (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
• An excellent pension scheme via the ABP.
• The possibility to compile an individual employment package every year.

Information Management translates the information needs of the various work, education, research and valorisation processes into a balanced information supply. Security & Privacy deals with information security and the correct implementation and execution of GDPR legislation at TU Delft. And Architecture establishes and monitors the coherent structure of the information provision.

The ICT Shared Service Centre handles services related to the continuity and optimisation of the existing information provision, while R&D/Innovation is concerned with the development of new technologies for the purpose of creating promising tools for education and research.
