Research Scientist I

Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
Research Scientist are individuals holding a PhD or equivalent terminal degree who play a major role in enabling research programs through collaborative and collegial interactions with faculty, postdocs fellows, graduate students, and staff. The rank of the research scientist is a staff appointment. A research scientist may apply his/her effort entirely to research, or a combination of research, training, and lab managerial activities. The classification of Research Scientist I is the entry level position in the job hierarchy.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Technical skills and competence to conduct quantifiable, meaningful research
 • Ability to interact with individuals of diverse backgrounds at all levels internal and external to the organization
 • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills 
• Ability to keyboard and utilize various standardized word processing, spreadsheet preparation, and presentation software.
 • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously 
• Ability to prioritize work, performing assignments with minimal supervision 
• Must be self-motivated and demonstrate initiative in handling responsibilities. 
SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES: 8. Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
 REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES: Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education and/or Experience
• MD and or PhD
Preferred Qualifications

• Work experience in an academic environment.
