Position Overview The Aquaculture Research Institute seeks to hire a Research Scientist I or II for a project funded for two years.The employee in this position will conduct research individually and as part of collaborative teams within the Aquaculture Research Institute at the Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment Station, Hagerman, Idaho. This position will perform research on fish physiology with an emphasis on growth, nutrition and gut health. A significant portion of this position involves the development of sponsored research projects from industry and governmental granting agencies, reporting and manuscript preparation, lab management, and graduate student mentoring. The incumbent will perform and oversee physiological, biochemical and molecular analyses, with an emphasis on genomic tools. Standard statistical methods will be applied to the data and interpreted for reporting and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Research Scientist I
Serves as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.
Research Scientist II
Designs and manages all aspects of a research portfolio complimentary to that of other research scientists or research faculty. Often maintains active research collaborations external to the university.
Unit Overview The Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) is an interdisciplinary entity at the University of Idaho designed to provide a focus for aquaculture and related fisheries research by faculty throughout the University. ARI works closely with the commercial sector, as well as with federal, state, and tribal agencies, having formal collaborative partnerships with the US Department of Agriculture and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. Research involves fish rearing studies but also basic research into the molecular, cellular, and organismal regulation of phenotypic responses to environment, diet and pathogens. ARI scientists use modern techniques and technology, such as next-gen sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics, to address research questions.

Key Accountability Research Scientist I
Job Duties Distinguishing Characteristics:
Presence of responsibility to oversee major multi-purpose research projects.
Examples of Work:
• Performing complex scientific analyses.
• Adjusting experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis.
• Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions.
• Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications and making recommendations.
• Preparing peer reviewed publications or presentations.
• Resolving complex project specific technical and regulatory issues.
• Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning and reviewing work.
• May be responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents.
• Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor.
• Providing functional supervision of temporary and hourly staff and other research support personnel.
• May include supervision of junior-level staff and students; does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities.

Examples of Work:
• Planning and conducting research in accordance with stipulated protocols and quality and safety standards.
• Performing complex scientific analyses.
• Developing new methods and guidelines for procedures.
• Directing the development of recommendations for project solutions.
• Performing peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications.
• Developing technical scientific management guidelines.
• Writing peer reviewed publications or presentations.
• Resolving complex project-specific technical and regulatory issues.
• Establishing work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning and reviewing work.
• Responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents.
• Participating in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor or primary investigator.
• May have an independent research program that is complimentary to research objectives of a broader research group or department within the institution.
• May include supervision of junior-level staff and students; does not include a full range of supervisory responsibilities.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience Research Scientist I
Three years of research experience related to the domain of this position
Research Scientist II
5 years of research experience beyond receipt of doctoral degree
Demonstrated record of research achievement
Participation in the development and submission of sponsored project proposals
Required Education Research Scientist I
Doctoral degree in Aquaculture, Animal Sciences, Fisheries, Biology, Biotechnology or related field; A master’s degree plus an additional two years of research experience may be substituted for a Ph.D.
Research Scientist II
Doctoral degree in Aquaculture, Animal Sciences, Fisheries, Biology, Biotechnology or related field.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Additional Preferred Research Scientist I
Record of writing proposals and acquiring externally funded grants.
Record of 2 or more lead-author publications in peer reviewed journals.
Experience with molecular/genomic assays, experimental design and data analysis.
Experience conducting research with fish.
Research Scientist II
Demonstrating ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
Experience serving as PI or Co-PI on extramurally funded research.
Experience working with industry on the development and execution of sponsored research projects.
