Description of Work Unit The NREL is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Position Summary The Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) in the Warner College of Natural Resources seeks a Research Project Manager (RPM) to help support the administration of variety of sponsored research and business activities. The RPM position functions within a dedicated fiscal office for the NREL that provides coordination, oversight, and direct support for the unique needs of the research unit, including accounting, HR, payroll, travel, and research administration functions.
The office supports management decisions with accurate and timely data, meaningful financial reporting, policy interpretation and personal assistance to individual researchers and staff. The office also ensures compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations in the conduct of college business. The team philosophy is an important concept in the operation of the unit and the RPM is expected to work collegiality with other team members to create an environment of cooperation and synergy.
This position reports to the NREL Business Manager in coordination with the NREL Director. The RPM is considered to be professional; the nature of the work being project management focused rather than transaction focused. An emphasis is placed on the ability to provide comprehensive research support, including analyzing and evaluating financial data and working cooperatively with representatives from other university service centers to support the accounting, HR and travel needs of ongoing research activities. This position is expected to operate independently, using professional training and experience to apply judgment in determining appropriate methods to use in order to ensure accurate and timely completion of multiple simultaneous workflows.
Required Job Qualifications
  • 2 years of directly related business experience that includes Accounting, Human Resources, and/or general operations
  • Proficiency in an office productivity suite, with particular emphasis on spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Experience independently managing multiple simultaneous projects or workflows
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience in contract and grant administration, specifically post award, working with a University Sponsored Programs Office, and knowledge of the Uniform Guidance.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment and knowledge with interpreting higher education issues, policies and structures.
  • Experience in fostering collaboration and cooperation amongst a diverse group of individuals.
  • Experience and working knowledge of accounting and information systems including Kuali Financial System, Oracle, TimeClock Plus, and Talent Management System.
  • Demonstrated communication skills, especially in email, both providing and requesting information in a professional manner.
  • Supervisory experience, especially in a training or teaching capacity.

Duty/Responsibility Process revenue for business activities, assist with monthly reconciliation of department and research project accounts, and process requests for personal and vendor reimbursements. Provide project balance and transaction information to researchers.

Duty/Responsibility Assist with initiation of job searches and hires, manage onboarding for new employees. Manage labor distributions and TimeClock Plus entries for hourly employees, review payroll transactions and reports, and work with supervisors to process any necessary corrections. Assist with staffing for salaried employees.

Duty/Responsibility Manage travel authorizations and travel reimbursements for department-related travel, coordinate with travel agencies to arrange flights, assist with hotel and catering for department-sponsored events. Manage department vehicle and motorpool requests.
