Programme for Emerging and Re-emerging Infection under the Infectious Diseases Division is conducting Nipah surveillance and research activities at multiple tertiary hospitals in Bangladesh, to identify Nipah outbreaks and develop interventions that can used to prevent Nipah transmission.

Position Description:

The Research Officer will report to the Research Investigator and will be responsible for identifying deaths in hospitals with Nipah-like symptoms. Additionally, they will engage with the deceased’s family members or attendants to encourage the collection of post-mortem biological samples, while also exploring social and behavioral activities related to risk factors for Nipah infection and transmission. S/he will be involved in:

  • Conducting literature reviews, analyze data, and derive scientific conclusions;
  • Plan, coordinate and manage field activities based on study requirements;
  • Collaborate with team members, Principal Investigators (PIs), Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) and Co-Investigators (Co-Is) on various project tasks;
  • Carry out qualitative interviews, transcribe them and perform data analysis;
  • Address community sensitivities and adapt responses as needed to support project goals;
  • Maintain detailed field notes, monitor daily project activities, and provide regular updates to the supervisor to meet study objectives;
  • Verify the credibility and trustworthiness of data to ensure high-quality research standards;
  • Regularly summarize and interpret collected data throughout the study;
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to develop high-quality research reports and presentations that synthesize qualitative and quantitative findings for scientific forums;
  • Assist in publishing mixed-method research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Masters in Anthropology from a reputed university with good academic records;
  • At least 3 years of experience in relevant fields;
  • Candidates having experience in Nipah project, vaccine uptake and acceptance related project and taking consent on postmortem needle biopsy will given preference;
