Research Manager, Family Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

    The Research Manager’s primary role will be to direct and manage the research program by creating clear and attainable project objectives, building the project requirements and managing the constraints of cost, time, scope and quality.  This includes developing and implementing research projects, assisting with strategic planning and implementation of daily tasks required to execute the business plan as well as directing staff research activities. In order to accomplish this the Research Manager will use his/her research expertise and experience.  The Research Manager will be required to define and communicate project performance expectations to staff, monitor project progress, use his/her leadership skills to guide staff, and assist staff to resolve research-related problems. The Research Manager will coordinate the administrative processes of the research project or unit and have responsibility to hire, discipline, evaluate, terminate and pay staff/faculty in a research project  

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Oversee financial management of the project
• Develop and negotiate research agreements and strategic alliances with outside parties
• Carry out duties of principal investigator, or co-investigator in research studies as authorized by the investigators and sponsors
• In conjunction with the Office of Research Administration, review of all confidentiality statements, legal disclosures, and legal documents
• Update the PI and study team on clinical trials activities including administrative, protocol-related, data management, quality and regulatory issues
• Chair research group meetings
• Liaise with investigators, administrative staff, sponsors, and clinical trials staff and develop excellent communication strategies
• Support initiation and development of research proposals and protocols and coordinate research grant process
• Management responsibilities:
  • Provides clear direction to staff employees in fast changing environment when there is complex and partial information
  • Responsible for full managerial discretion, such as hiring, performance management and termination
  • Coordinates priorities of the research project to meet deadlines
  • Will be required to liaise with senior researchers and leaders on research-related issues
  • Instructs others in the use of project management tools
  • Ability to manage human, financial and physical resources within an operating environment
  • Contribute to writing scientific publications
  • Contribute to writing grants
• Staff Management:
  • Managing the daily activities of staff or team of staff.
  • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group.
  • Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff.
  • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
  • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff.
  • Ensures all staff have a Hazard Assessments in place to reduce risk for their position.
• Use of Technical Knowledge & Expertise:
  • Provide expert oversight on technical matters
  • Collaborate in designing research projects (including clinical trials)
• Communication:
  • Engage the external environment through thought leadership and by publishing scientific work
  • Establish and maintain visible and active engagement with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and academic institutions
  • Oversee completion of reports
  • Develop presentations to report scientific progress
  • Present project progress at conferences and meetings to encourage collaboration
  • Act as a liaison to provide communication between research teams, supervisors, and funders
  • Author scientific reports to provide updates to funders

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Masters or PhD. in related field preferred
• Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment an asset
• Must maintain a recognized research professional certification (e.g. CCRP Certified Clinical Research Professional)
• Advanced knowledge of research administrative procedures is required.
• Excellent leadership and organizational skills
• Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills.
• Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
• Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
• Knowledgeable in writing medical/scientific research protocols
• Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication, strong scientific and academic writing skills required
• Proficiency with databases, database design, statistical software and electronic medical records
• Knowledge of research design and basic knowledge of biostatistics
• Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
• Extensive knowledge of patient privacy policies, FOIP
• Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload
• Professionalism and self-motivation
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work under pressure and attention to detail
