JOB SUMMARY
This Research Manager will plan, manage, coordinate and communicate research activities of SmartMom and SmartParent. These programs provide prenatal and parenting education through text messaging.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The Research Manager will report to the principal investigator (PI) and work cooperatively with a team of investigators. The position will work closely with the Perinatal Managers (within each of five health authorities) who oversee the planning and operational functions of perinatal services within their respective regions.
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
WORK PERFORMED
The Research Manager will be in charge of planning and managing aspects of the programs including:
Organization
- Implementing strategic work plans and timelines
- Scheduling program meetings, preparing agendas, and taking and distributing minutes
- Acting as liaison between investigators, BC Health Authorities, the funding agency, and the general public
- Maintaining and disseminating program materials to participating agencies, providing information and explaining program objectives
- Supervising junior staff, student researchers and volunteers
- Sources and orders study equipment and supplies
SmartMom Clinical Trial Management
- Overseeing the development of the RedCap enrollment platform
- Overseeing the development of the RedCap randomization platform
- Obtaining participants’ consent to the trial
- Ensuring documentation for each trial participant is complete
- Overseeing the development of the control intervention (text messages)
- Overseeing the development of upgrading of SmartMom messaging to be relevant to participants across Canada
- Developing champions for the trial in Canadian provinces and territories with the PI
- Overseeing the development of online questionnaires for the SmartMom trial
- Managing honorarims for trial participants
- Developing and managing a tracking system for progress of trial participants through trial participation and data submission
- Working with the trial marketing specialist to create a trial newsletter, and marketing materials
Technical Oversight
- Identifying technical and user issues with the study platforms and enrollment, liaising with technology partners to coordinate updates and fixes, and overseeing the implementation of changes
- Assisting clients with program queries and providing technical support, including troubleshooting enrollment issues
- Overseeing data extraction and database management by technology partner and presenting evaluation information
- Coordinating the workflow of contractors
Recruitment and Marketing
- Participates in marketing strategies for SmartMom and SmartParent
Communication:
- Reporting study updates to participating agencies
- Preparing data and research reports for granting agencies and stakeholders
- Facilitating communication among participating health authorities
- Participating in developing communication strategies for Smartmom and SmartParent
- Coordinating updates to the SmartMom and SmartParent websites
- Participating in knowledge translation and acting as resource person for public relations issues
- Preparing and presenting monthly progress reports to Principal Investigator
Research
- Conducting quantitative data analysis
- Initiating ethical review applications, renewals and amendments
- Preparing mailouts and managing order fulfillment for program resource orders
- Supporting grant writing, including editing project proposals and drafting budgets
- Supporting manuscript preparation for publication
- Coordinating exhibition and abstract submissions for conferences
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
Errors in communications with participating agencies could lead to a presentation of erroneous information, which would damage the study’s credibility. Insufficient supervision could lead to delays in data collection which could compromise data quality and study completion.
This position will be responsible for the access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed, and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports to the principal investigator. Work reviewed against achievement of project objectives. The Research Manager will meet with supervisors once a week to report on progress.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
This position provides supervision to junior staff, student researchers and volunteers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation preferred.
- Preferred experience in the following areas: working in a health research environment, clinical trial management, project management, program evaluation, maintaining digital/mobile health technology, liaising with different stakeholders and funding agencies, and fluency with SMS texting.
- Ability to effectively use MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Understanding of mobile website and applications development processes and terminology.
- Experience with Hootsuite, Bitly, WordPress, web analytics and familiarity with social media platforms preferred.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Proven ability to work in a confidential environment.
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a remote team environment.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
