Research Laboratory Technician, Clinical Neurosciences, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Laboratory Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Laboratory Technician reports to the Principal Investigator, with accountabilities from both the Principal Investigator and Laboratory Manager.

The position will provide technical support for the research team, other team members through completion of common laboratory tasks and carrying out experiments in a team setting. Work requires possible exposure to dangerous materials in an environment of continuous change.

Position may occasionally require weekend/evening hours.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working with established protocols to log and process clinical samples from ongoing Human Studies
  • Establishing and maintaining of primary tissue cultures
  • Maintains clear and well-documented reports of all activities and research experiments
  • Assist in the training and orientation of new trainees
  • Making up basic laboratory stock solutions
  • Autoclaving glassware, solutions, laboratory reagents and items for tissue culture and molecular biology
  • Provide skilled technical support to a research laboratory that include performing experiments
  • Some animal work may be required assisting trainees when needed
  • Keeping common areas (e.g. mammalian tissue culture hoods and incubators) tidy and clean
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and university regulations
  • Operate and maintain basic technical equipment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A technical diploma in a related field, or BSc degree required
  • Experience in a research environment is considered an asset
  • Attention to detail is crucial in following standard operating procedures and is required
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, accuracy, and strong attention to detail required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and university regulations
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience in tissue culture is an asset
