Working at CQUniversity
You will lead a research program focused on genetic improvement technologies in the Northern Australia livestock industries. The northern red meat sector could make substantial gains in productivity and sustainability through the increased utilisation of genetic improvement technologies. However, there are several key challenges in the development and implementation of these systems in Northern Australia. One of these has been the difficulty in collecting objective phenotypic data across the large and diverse landscapes in which these animals are managed. This has been the focus of a CQU led program of research which has been developing automated phenotyping technologies to gather data on key traits using walk-over-weigh and on-animal sensor systems.
In this role you will continue to lead this research as well as advancing your own program of novel genetic science leveraging the experience of CQU team in remote animal monitoring. This could include:
• Novel trait development
• Development of new phenotyping technologies
• Genetic by environment interactions
• Epigenetics and gene expression
or any other specialty with application to beef, sheep and/or goat industries in extensive grazing industries. Priority areas of application of your genetic research program could include the industry identified targets of:
• Reducing enteric methane
• Improving animal welfare
• Increasing reproductive efficiency
• Improving meat quality and market compliance
This position provides a unique opportunity for you as a highly motivated researcher to make a significant impact on the Northern livestock sector as it seeks to increase the rate of genetic improvement across the industry.
Our highly qualified and experienced staff are great teachers, educators and researchers which means that your experience in the School of Health, Medical and Applied Science will be second to none. Our facilities include health clinics, salons, science laboratories, exercise suites and agricultural field sites which all add essential practical experience to our courses. Our research activities focus on national research priorities that are important for social, environmental and economic well-being, both nationally and globally. A majority of our research is conducted in partnership with local, state and federal governments, industry and other organisations with a particular focus on regional needs.
