Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow


PRIMARY DETAIL

We are seeking an experienced health services/pharmacist researcher to join our team undertaking leading research investigating innovative approaches to improve the management, monitoring and use of medications for older Australians.

THE ROLE

  • Salary Package: Research Fellow (Level B) base salary $110,273 – $130,471 or Senior Research Fellow (Level C) base salary $134,644 – $154,842 plus 17% employer’s superannuation and annual leave loading (Pro-rata rates apply for part-time appointments)

  • Appointment type: Full-time or part-time, fixed-term position for 3 years (depending on the position)

  • Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

About the Role

The successful applicant will play a major role in funded research projects which include an NHMRC Partnership Project to establish and evaluate a National Medication Aged Care Roundtable and other grants focussing on innovative use of informatics to improve the quality and safety of care in residential aged care facilities.

The role involves working with a supportive, multi-disciplinary research team and industry partners committed to applied research which improves care for older people and produces nationally and internationally leading research outcomes.

The successful applicant/s will be interested in working in a multi-disciplinary team and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders. They will continue to develop and expand their own research strengths and interests, particularly as they align with the Centre’s research programs.

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking and challenging what’s possible to solve some of the big issues of our time, both nationally and on a global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. We have active research programs in neurosciences (especially motor neuron disease, neurological rehabilitation and the clinical neuroscience of pain), cancer medicine, and vascular science, amongst others. Our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health and patient safety. 

The Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, one of the core research centres within AIHI, has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on investigating the outcomes and safety of health services.  The Centre has particular expertise in assessing the impact of information technologies and investigating the role of electronic health records and decision support in supporting improved health care delivery and health outcomes.  The Centre’s research team is multi-disciplinary and applies a broad range of research techniques, from RCT designs to direct observational studies of clinical work.

Selection Criteria

Essential Selection Criteria for Senior Research Fellow – Level C applicants:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. health services research implementation science; pharmacy, health informatics)

  • A strong track record of relevant publications in high quality journals and citations (with a good number of first-authored papers)

  • Demonstrable experience in managing large collaborative projects with a variety of stakeholders

  • A demonstrated ability to attract external research funding as lead investigator on successful grants.

  • Research experience and skills relevant to improving clinical practice (e.g. learning health system approaches, quality improvement, behaviour change, implementation science) that can be applied to investigating and improving aged care medication issues in collaboration with aged care providers, clinicians and policy-makers.

  • Excellent understanding of the Australian health care/aged care system and experience working with health system partners

  • Demonstrable experience in the application of a range of research methods including quantitative data analytic skills and experience with statistical software packages such as SAS, Stata, Python, and/or R.

  • Experience with higher degree research student supervision.

Essential Selection Criteria for Research Fellow – Level B applicants:

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., pharmacy, epidemiology, health services research, health informatics)

  • A track record of relevant publications

  • Good knowledge of the Australian/aged care health care system

  • Demonstrable experience in the application of a range of research methods including quantitative data analytic skills and experience with statistical software packages such as SAS, Stata, Python, and/or R.

  • Research experience and skills relevant to investigating aged care medication issues.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff, students, management, health care providers and recipients, and external stakeholders

Desirable

  • Experience and knowledge of medication issues in the aged care sector

  • Mixed methods research experience

  • Experience using and analysing a range of different types of linked health datasets
