Research Fellow, School of Natural and Built Environment

Job Description:

The School of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) at Queen’s University Belfast is currently seeking to appoint exceptional candidates to Research Fellow positions in the Economic and Social Research Council funded project “Geographies of Ethnic Diversity and Inequalities (GEDI).”

Led by Dr Gemma Catney, this project will examine, analyse and explain the UK’s changing ethnic geographies through a novel integration of research strands on ethnic diversity, residential segregation, socio-spatial inequalities and migration. GEDI is a timely and innovative programme of research which aims to use Census data to provide a comprehensive picture of the small area (neighbourhood) ethnic landscape of the UK, and how this has changed over time (1991-2021/22).

The successful candidates will be highly productive, ambitious and collaborative members of the GEDI project team, assisting in the planning and delivery of the research. Each Research Fellow will focus on a set of research themes best linked to their experience and background. These will include ethnic diversity, segregation and mixing; socio-spatial ethnic inequalities; internal migration and (im)mobility. Experience with analysis of secondary population data is essential.

The researchers will be based in Geography, in the School of Natural and Built Environment, at QUB. One post has a duration of 38 months, and the other 20 months, but there is a single application process.

Your application should clearly demonstrate that you have:

  • Obtained, or are about to obtain, a PhD in Geography, or another Social Sciences discipline (with a quantitative focus). Applicants from Data Science/Computer Science backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.
  • At least three years of relevant research experience, to include:
  • Research experience in Population Geography or an allied area
  • A proven track record of using statistical methods and GIS to analyse data, as relevant to the research project
  • Working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of research project(s)
  • Independent research and time management.
  • A strong publication record, commensurate with stage of career.

Please note the above are not an exhaustive list.

Fixed Term 38 months and 20 months.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance, but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
