Research Fellow – Remote Sensing (Biological Sciences)

Job Description

The Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (CNCS) at the National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow, with expertise on remote sensing of the natural environment to work on a research project which aims to develop and improve internationally-recognised standards and methodologies to ensure the credibility and integrity of nature-based carbon projects. The appointment for this role is for an initial period of one year with the possibility of renewal and is expected to begin in August 2023 or soon thereafter.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

•    Design, develop and improve methodologies and models for aboveground biomass carbon estimates, including collection and processing of remote sensing data
•    Conduct multidisciplinary research integrating remote sensing and plant allometry to advance the understanding of biomass distribution in tropical Asia
•    Develop and manage research collaborations with regional partners, working closely and effectively with the project team of international researchers 
•    Preparation of research manuscripts and reports, and presentation of research findings to external stakeholders
•    Mentor the Centre’s graduate and undergraduate students and support Centre-level initiatives where applicable


Qualifications / Discipline:
•    A PhD degree in geographic information science, physical geography, natural science or a related field

•    Strong numerical skills and proficient in coding in R and/or Python programming languages
•    Handling of large-scale geospatial data, and in conducting geospatial analysis and modelling
•    Statistical computing and data visualisation tools
•    Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, including attention to details
•    Highly self-motivated, independent, and a team player

•    Proficient in processing and analysis of different types of remote sensing data (e.g. optical, LiDAR, SAR) for studying of natural ecosystems
•    Experience with UAVs and/or TLS is preferred
•    Research experience in tropical forest carbon accounting and assessments
•    Evidence of previous publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals
