The aim of the project, funded by EPSRC, is to develop improved understanding and predictive models for flow over rough surfaces, with the added complexity of pressure gradients, both favourable and adverse. The main tool of the project will be direct numerical simulation based on realistic engineering surfaces, for which we have previously obtained surface scans. The calculations will be done initially for a mixed Couette-Poiseuille flow and then extended to boundary layers under equilibrium and non-equilibrium pressure gradient conditions. The project will involve use of supercomputer resources (ARCHER2) and will be an opportunity to deploy new tools for analysis of large data sets and for machine learning. Besides improved understanding of rough-wall flow, the end product is expected to be new predictive models suitable for engineering application.
You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications/experience in Fluid Dynamics, with expertise in turbulent flow physics and in running large parallel simulations. You will be expected to work as part of a team and to prepare reports and presentations for project meetings and publications for international journals. You will have the opportunity to co-supervise PhD students working on fluid flow problems across a range of speeds from incompressible to hypersonic and participate in the development of tools for flow simulation on exascale computers.
Please contact Prof. Neil Sandham (n.sandham@soton.ac.uk) for further details about the position.
*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
Application Procedure
You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk . The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
