Research Fellow in Tuberculosis Research Group in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences (CES), Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton
Applications are invited for this full-time post-doctoral research position with the tuberculosis research group, funded by an MRC project grant entitled “Investigating local determinants of outcome in human tuberculosis”. This study utilises the 3D biomimetic model of TB developed by the Southampton group to study the host-pathogen interaction. The post-holder will work closely alongside Drs Liku Tezera and Paul Elkington, and will combine 3D cell culture modelling with imaging and immunological readouts to study the effect of interventions. The biomimetic model has provided diverse insights (eg JID 2015, eLife 2017, mBio 2017, eLife 2020, JCI 2021, JCI 2021) and the current programme will bring additional technologies to study infection. Candidates should have a PhD* in immunology or cell biology and a track record of research excellence. Candidates with a PhD in infection, molecular biology, biochemistry, transcriptomics or a relevant field with experience in cell culture and immunoassays will also be considered. Training will be provided, and so we are seeking a highly motivated applicant with good core skills. The key attributes are teamwork, enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and interpersonal skills. The post is funded for 2 ½ years initially.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant multidisciplinary team of researchers in the Academic Unit of Clinical & Experimental Sciences (CES), Section of Innate Immunity. The University of Southampton (UoS) is a world-class research-intensive Russell Group university, and central themes of the Faculty of Medicine and NIHR Biomedical research centre are Infectious diseases, Respiratory Medicine and Interdisciplinary research.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
