Research Fellow in Protected Cropping

  • Full time – Fixed Term until 31 October 2025.
  • Based in Launceston.

The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) helps to enable the agricultural industry through research, development, and the delivery of educational offerings relevant to Tasmania.

The Opportunity

As the Research Fellow in Protected Cropping your aim is to boost productivity and sustainability in protected cropping systems, including cherries and berries, based on outstanding scientific research in the field and laboratory. The successful candidate will define and identify the problems to be solved, undertake applied science and work in partnership with growers and the private sector to determine the benefits of new research and innovations. This position is linked to a five-year Hort Frontiers funded research program on cool climate Horticulture. The program aims to address the barriers to sustainable expansion of cool climate horticulture across key horticultural sectors through research co-designed with industry and an interdisciplinary team from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture

Key Accountabilities:

  • Undertake high-quality research of national and international standing, secure funding, publish research findings and supervise research higher degree students.
  • Develop and implement Hort Frontiers research program in cool climate Horticulture in protected cropping.
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders  in the development of funded research projects for protected cropping
  • Participate in awareness raising and extension activities that makes an impact to the industry.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • A good record of research that has achieved national recognition and made worthwhile impact to protected cropping horticulture.
  • Evidenced experience in awareness raising, extension and adoption of innovative research outcomes that have made a difference to industry.
  • Evidence of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive links locally and nationally with growers, horticultural  vegetable industry and researchers
  • Knowledge of agriculture technology and digital innovation relevant to the protected cropping sector.

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at an Academic Level A or B negotiable based on the successful application experiences, qualifications and competencies.

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $115,310 comprising base salary within the range of $76,213 to $98,555 plus 17% superannuation.

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $142,799 comprising base salary within the range of $105,131 to $122,050 plus 17% superannuation.
