Research Fellow in Human Factors – Artificial Intelligence and/or Clinical Decision-Making in Diagnostics

Job summary

We are looking for an ambitious Research Fellow in Human Factors to join our expanding, multidisciplinary team working on state-of-the-art diagnostics. We anticipate that the appointee will lead Human Factors evaluations of AI applications in diagnostics and implications for Clinical Decision Making. The appointee will investigate models of integration of such technologies within specific clinical pathways and consequences on clinical workflow and patient care. They will develop tools and methods of investigation to be generalised to other contexts of care. Dedicated time will be made available for this.

The appointee will have significant experience in Human Factors research and will be seeking to develop their career to become a leader in our research team. The successful candidate  will undertake applied Human Factors research on a variety of healthcare projects using the core methodologies of the NIHR London In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) Co-op. These include assessing stakeholders needs, conducting systems analysis and process mapping and working closely with innovators, industry and clinicians to develop game-changing diagnostics. For example, these currently include AI applications in emergency medicine, breath tests for cancer and point of care tests for covid.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To develop research & submit research proposals in HF research in AI application in diagnostics and/or Clinical decision making
  • To publish their research in peer review journals
  • To work closely with companies or other researchers to support the development of diagnostic and related tests
  • To independently carry out systems analysis, usability evaluations, stakeholder interviews and process mapping research within London IVD methodologies
  • To independently recruit study participants, maintain accurate records of data, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
  • To participate, contribute and advance the methodology research undertaken by London IVD
  • To independently prepare study materials, collect and analyse data, write progress reports, and prepare results for publication and dissemination via presentations and peer-reviewed journals
  • To develop research collaborations within the Department/Division/Faculty and wider academic community in order to further the project aims
  • To direct the work of small research teams, as required
  • To comply with the College, Division, and Unit safety practices and to attend courses on safety when appropriate
  • Any other duties as may be deemed reasonable by Head of group as well as Head of Division/Department/Section
  • To support companies in demonstrating compliance with relevant regulatory standards for diagnostic tests
  • To undertake any necessary training and/or development

Essential requirements

  • PhD in human factors, psychology, sociology, engineering design or healthcare research (e.g. research nurse, medical researcher).
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary research
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and statistical procedures
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Dealing with specific groups of people, e.g. sponsors, funding bodies
  • Evidence of having made a significant contribution to writing proposals
  • Experience in data presentation and statistical analyses

This is a Full Time & Fixed Term post offered initially for 12 months, with potential for extension.

The post will be based at St Mary’s Hospital, (Paddington) and Hammersmith Hospital (East Acton).

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023.  Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.  The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
