You will be working under the supervision of Prof. Bharathram Ganapathisubramani on a project to understand the aerodynamics and aero-acoustics of turbulent boundary layers. The position is funded by the EPSRC and is linked to a separate position on the same topic using numerical simulations.
The aim of the project is to conduct a range of experiments in the University of Southampton’s wind tunnel facility to understand the mechanisms responsible for drag and noise in turbulent flow over rough surfaces under external influences (pressure gradient, freestream turbulence etc). We expect to use a combination of this experimental data as well as numerical data (obtained by colleagues) to develop data-driven modelling and predictive tools for these flows. There will also be opportunities to supervise post-graduate students and to get involved in other projects in fluid mechanics in the fields of reduced-order modelling, flow control, wall-bounded turbulence, and diagnostics development.
You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications/experience in Fluid Dynamics with expertise in turbulent flow physics and experience in wind tunnel (or water tunnel) measurements. You will be expected to work as part of a team and to prepare reports and presentations for project meetings and publications for international journals.
Applications for Research Fellow will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant
will be given. Please contact Prof. Bharathram Ganapathisubramani (g.bharath@soton.ac.uk) for further details about the position.
