Research Fellow in Epidemiology / Medical Statistics / Health Data Science

Applications are invited for an Epidemiologist / Medical Statistician / Health Data Scientist to be based in the Centre for Mental Health and Safety. The successful applicant will work on a 39-month research programme, led by Prof Roger Webb, that sits in the Mental Health Theme of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).
The COVID-19 pandemic has had major mental health impact, unevenly across different type of families and neighbourhoods, thereby widening antecedent inequalities. The successful applicant will examine: 1) Temporal trends and geospatial patterning in incidence and prevalence of psychiatric illnesses and risks of non-fatal self-harm and suicide; and 2) How deprivation and psychopathology combine to influence healthcare utilisation and mortality risk in people with multi-morbidity. Novel observations generated by this population-level discovery programme will inform the development of targeted public health interventions.
Responsibilities will include designing epidemiological studies and carrying out statistical analyses of them using large data sources such as the Greater Manchester Care Record (GMCR) and the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). Experience of examining large cohorts derived from electronic health records, as well as of authoring manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, is required.
You will hold an MSc and/or PhD (or equivalent) in epidemiology, medical statistics / biostatistics, health data science, health services research, or some other quantitative academic subject, have experience of managing and manipulating large and complex datasets as well as proficiency in a statistical software programming language in packages such as Stata or R, and have an emerging academic publication profile.
The successful applicant will be based in the Jean McFarlane Building, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, with some periods of time also spent working remotely.
