This Research Fellow position is responsible for developing software, researching, and publishing in cyber security and one or more areas of artificial intelligence, and multi-agent systems. The research fellow will work with a team of researchers from multiple organisations on an externally funded project related to cyber security. This position supports the Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation (CSRI) in delivering high-quality project outcomes, including publishing in top-tier venues, and developing research grant applications.

In addition to your knowledge of encryption pertaining to cyber security, your understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) technology will support your software development capability. This is an opportunity to bring project delivery experience to the fore as part of the research work.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Initiating, designing, conducting and may lead productive, high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs
  • Engaging collaboratively to develop novel and high-quality research or creative activities
  • Widely communicating outputs to discipline(s) and the community
  • Ensuring impact of academic activity in the field and the community
  • Supporting the team when seeking funding for research and creative activities
  • Building national reputation, based on growing, focused body of work recognised for quality, excellence and impact
  • Initiating, designing, conducting and may lead intra- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations, to enable major breakthroughs in knowledge and understanding and solutions to complex problems
  • Initiating, designing, conducting and may lead in development of industry partnerships and collaboration to enable major breakthroughs, innovative solutions for future translation into real world impact
  • Supporting and may lead in applications for external competitive and other funding, and demonstrate sustained efforts
  • Building a track record of timely delivery of outcomes for industry partners
  • Initiating, designing, conducting and may lead innovation and translation into policies, frameworks, strategy, priority setting and other outcomes to create positive impact
  • Supporting attraction of external funding for commercialisation and translation activities
  • Building portfolio of policy and strategy influence, generation of products, services or other innovations with positive real-world impact
  • Demonstrating timely delivery of commercialisation and translation outcomes
  • Supervising honours and/or HDR students with timely completions and productive, high-quality outcomes
  • Providing effective mentoring to HDR students to support professional career development and employability
  • Adopting and promoting a culture of research excellence, innovation and impact
  • Establishing/expanding industry networks to create opportunities for placements
  • Supporting industry partnerships that provide HDRs with industry experience

Key selection criteria for this role:

  • PhD in computer science or relevant discipline
  • Experience with software development and project delivery
  • Knowledge of AI technology including graphical models, reinforcement learning and agent techniques
  • Knowledge of cyber security defence and attack technologies, privacy preserving, and cryptography and encryption
  • Emerging reputation in research and scholarship through publications and/or exhibitions
  • Success in obtaining external research funding
  • Ability to contribute to communities through research
  • Capacity to contribute to leadership of research and administration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues
