About Us/Mō mātou

The Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Otago is the longest established department of its kind at a New Zealand university, and is the only New Zealand university to offer a Sport and Exercise Nutrition programme (undergraduate and postgraduate) as well as Foodservice management and Global Nutrition at the undergraduate level, and an Advanced Nutrition Practice degree at the postgraduate level.

As the largest university Department of Human Nutrition in New Zealand it makes a major contribution to the discipline of nutrition both nationally and internationally. The Department is privileged to carry out many research projects in collaboration with other departments and institutions both within New Zealand and overseas.

The Role/Te mahi

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to contribute significantly to the management and delivery of three High-Value Nutrition projects, and one international industry-funded project. In addition, the appointee will be expected to provide theoretical and practical dietary assessment knowledge and training to staff and students in the Department of Human Nutrition where needed, including New Zealand Food Composition Database ad FoodWorks software application. The appointee will also be responsible for managing the clinic research facilities, including infrastructure management and responsibilities pertaining to Health and Safety.

In this role you will be responsible for:

•    Serving as co-Principal Investigator for an international industry funded project being undertaken in 2022 to 2023.
•    Assisting the research project Principal Investigators (PIs) for three High-Value Nutrition (HVN) projects being undertaken in the department between 2022 to 2024
•    Oversight of dietary assessment tools and training in the Department of Human Nutrition, including staff support and leading of student tutorials for undergraduate papers.
•    Oversight of the Department of Human Nutrition clinic research facilities, including management of health and safety.
•    Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the Department and its responsibilities within the University and wider community.

Your Skills and Experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

•    A postgraduate degree in Human Nutrition, preferably research-based thesis.
•    Previous experience in managing all aspects of clinical trials.
•    Extensive working knowledge of dietary assessment, including FoodWorks software applications.
•    Extensive knowledge of the New Zealand Food Composition database in regards to food data acquisition and use.
•    Previous tertiary level teaching experience preferable.
•    Experience working in Health & Safety, including First Aid certificate.
•    Previous experience working with study sponsors preferable.
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•    Excellent organisational skills.

As this role involves collaborative work, you are expected to have well-developed interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team.

This a full time, permanent appointment, with an expected start date of 1 October 2022.
