Research Fellow, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences

• Salary Package: $97,621 to $104,622 (Level A step 6-8) plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
• Appointment Type: Full or part-time fixed term, until June 2024 (possibility of extension)

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to conduct a collaborative research project with Macquarie University Hospital. The successful candidate will design, conduct and publish the results of research on reducing clinical variation and improving outcomes in surgical perioperative care. This project will include qualitative interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, as well as the opportunity to conduct quantitative evaluation with statistician support. The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will co-lead the implementation science component of the project, including developing tools and evaluation models to support adoption of perioperative care pathways, and support knowledge translation activities. The successful applicant will work with a team of researchers, led by Dr Mitchell Sarkies and Prof Jeffrey Braithwaite. They will liaise with a range of academics, research and administrative staff as well as stakeholders from Macquarie University Hospital.

About You

You will have a strong background in a health-related field, such as clinical training (medicine, nursing or allied health), health services research, public health, medical and health sciences, human factors, implementation science or psychology. Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods is preferred, which can be further developed while in the role. You will understand the Australian health care system and the challenges faced when translating evidence into practice. A commitment to healthcare quality and safety improvement is desired. You will have excellent writing skills and experience publishing in peer reviewed academic journals. In addition, you will have other research outputs like conference presentations and lay media dissemination. You will have experience conducting systematic reviews and are familiar with issues relating to implementation science in hospital settings.

The position would suit a highly organised and motivated individual who can work to deadlines with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail. You will also have excellent communication skills, initiative, capacity for problem solving and a demonstrated ability to work independently.

CHRIS is part of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, and has a successful track record of undertaking research and evaluation projects on health sector issues since 1991. Its core interest is to investigate issues of policy, governance and leadership in the health sector. It is involved in conducting original research into clinical governance issues, providing a scholarly capability by which to evaluate health sector policies, programs and projects, and contributing to undergraduate medical, postgraduate health services management, and public health and doctoral education.

Essential Selection Criteria

• A PhD in a relevant discipline
• Excellent communication skills with an ability to lead projects involving a range of healthcare stakeholders, including policy makers, hospital executives, clinicians, and patients
• Demonstrated experience designing, conducting, analysing and publishing research
• Track record of peer reviewed publications in high quality journals and conference presentations
• Demonstrated experience contributing to the academic life and administrative tasks of the broader workplace, with a track record of effective teamwork

Desirable

• Experience in student supervision
• Experience with NVivo and statistical software packages
• Interest in and evidence of capacity for interdisciplinary and multi-method research
• Understanding of implementation science in the Australian healthcare system
• Demonstrated experience undertaking systematic reviews
