The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is the premier Australian Department in its discipline. Its research and teaching aims to understand and communicate biological processes and how these are altered in disease. Research and teaching in the department encompass six broad themes: cell biology, signal transduction, host/pathogen interaction, structural biology, immunology and developmental biology. The research is highly relevant to major human diseases and pathological processes, including infection, inflammation, diabetes and obesity, developmental and degenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
The Ramaciotti Centre for Cryo-Electron Microscopy is a university research platform and is part of the national grid of Microscopy Australia facilities. Its mission is to enable and advance research excellence through the provision of a world-class research capability in electron microscopy for the biomedical sciences. The Centre enables life sciences EM workflows from experimental design to data analysis with expertise in immuno EM, volume EM, correlative light and electron microscopy, cryo tomography and single particle analysis.
The Opportunity
The research fellow will conduct research and develop research expertise in high-resolution Cryo-EM imaging of mitochondria under stress. This ARC funded position is aimed at characterising the formation and fate of DNA-containing mitochondrial-derived vesicles in apoptotic cells. The project will require expertise in microscopy and cell biology preferably in the area of mitochondrial biology and/or membrane trafficking. A combination of optical microscopy techniques together with Cryo-CLEM, Cryo-FIB-milling and cryo-tomography will be used throughout the project. The position is under the joint supervision of Associate Professor Georg Ramm and Dr Kate McArthur together with Professor Ben Kile at the University of Adelaide.
About you:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A doctoral qualification in the relevant discipline (i.e., biochemistry or cell biology) or a closely related field
- Expertise in microscopy and cell biology preferably in the area of mitochondrial biology and/or membrane trafficking
- Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to supervise, mentor and support the development of research staff and postgraduate students
Monash benefits include:
- Hybrid and flexible work arrangements available – Work from home 2 days a week
- Professional development and study support
- Collaborative and Inclusive culture
- Health and well-being initiatives – Employee Assistance Program (provided by Benestar) available to all employees and their immediate family members
- Salary packaging options available and staff discounts
