An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Fellow to join the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases on a new new project, ‘Healthy Mums, Healthy Babies: Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation in Ethiopia’ This has been added to the portfolio of joint LSHTM/EPHI (Ethiopian Public Health Institute) research portfolio and will be the primary focus for the post-holder. The project involves evaluation of the effect on birthweight of a possible switch in government policy from iron-folate supplementation during routine antenatal care to multiple micronutrient supplementations during antenatal care. Evaluation methods consist of a multi-disciplinary randomised controlled trial in Ethiopia. 

The post holder will be based at EPHI in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where they will be responsible for day-to-day management and co-ordination of the study, working collaboratively with EPHI counterparts. 

The post holder will be involved in the development of tools, training of national teams, piloting of tools and inductive revision as required, will have ongoing communications with national teams to ensure quality and efficiency of data collection and will also lead coding and analysis of qualitative data and will lead and contribute to dissemination outputs, together with national teams. The post holder will report to the LSHTM PI of the MMS trial, Professor Tanya Marchant.

The successful applicant will have a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in epidemiology or related fields as well as relevant experience in the design and implementation of public health evaluation or randomized controlled trials. Further criteria include proven experience of design and management of data collection in a rural African setting and working with standard operating procedures for health research. Demonstrated experience in data analysis, including proficiency in at least one statistical software is also a requirement.as is the ability to contribute to peer reviewed written output and working both indecently and collaboratively within a research team. Amaharic language skills and readiness to live in Ethiopia are also required to deliver the role. Further particulars are available in the job description.

The post is full-time (35 hours per week) and is currently funded until 28  February 2025. The salary will be on the Academic scale Grade 6 scale in the range £41 829 – £47,503 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
