About the team  

The Oceans Graduate School engages in fundamental and applied research to find solutions for the critical issues facing our oceans, coasts and estuaries. Our School operates state-of-the-art facilities around Western Australia used for world-class marine research to investigate the ocean. The Oceans Graduate School engages with partners around the world, including other universities, governments and research institutions, so more can be done to better our oceans and ensure a healthy future for our population.

About the opportunity  

An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Fellow to develop and test a new aerial camera system and associated algorithms to estimate surface currents via wave inversion.

Your key responsibility will be overseeing the development of the hardware and implementing and testing the algorithms necessary for the project. You will also need to collaborate effectively with the industry partners, assist in developing research proposals for future funding and communicate your results effectively.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: 

  • A PhD in Physical Oceanography, Ocean Engineering  or an Earth Observation related discipline
  • Expertise or experience in at least one of the following: collecting and analysing in situ ocean observations, aerial photogrametry and platforms, or spatial data processing.
  • Strong computational, statistical and numerical analysis skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Experience with Bayesian inference, model inversion or other techniques for uncertainty quantification is desirable but not essential

 About you  

This role requires the successful candidate to be available to travel within the state, to remote regions, including at sea, and attend international conferences and meetings from time to time.
