Research Fellow

About Us:

The Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC), established in 2012, is a research centre at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. LKYCIC aims to stimulate research on cities and urbanisation, and explore the role of technology, design and policy in providing urban solutions.

We are looking for a full-time Research Fellow broadly interested in educational sciences and curriculum (re)-design to join the project titled “How the lightbulb was invented: Sparking creativity with ‘deliberate- learning-from-failure’ interventions”. This inter-disciplinary project studies how we can create learning environments in which students are more willing to innovate and experiment in their design work. Specifically, by designing interventions that make students more tolerant to making failures, we expect them to take more risky decisions leading to more innovative and creative outcomes. We use qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and design thinking principles to prototype interventions and implement them into actual design projects of students.

About the Position:

This position is ideal for someone who is excited about applied research and is looking to consolidate or further develop their experience in curriculum (re)-design in a dynamic, inter-disciplinary team. The candidate will be expected to:

  • Research and write literature reviews
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator and research team to refine project research design, including the formulation of research questions and hypotheses, and developing the details for the appropriate methodologies
  • Coordinate different research activities related to the project across two Institutes for Higher Learning
  • Consolidate and develop surveys and questionnaires via which the effectiveness of interventions are tested
  • Prepare, conduct, and implement interventions based on a range of design thinking workshops and activities
  • Help prepare manuscripts and reports for publication
  • Communicate research with public and private stakeholders and collaborators

Duration:

This is a contract position. The term of appointment will be 2 years, extensible to longer terms upon satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in educational sciences, curriculum design, education policy/practice, or related fields. Fresh PhD graduates who have submitted their thesis are encouraged to apply
  • An interest in developing innovation and creativity in education
  • Strong demonstrated skills design thinking
  • Experience conducting surveys and questionnaires
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Sound organisational and data management skills

How to Apply:

Interested applicants are to submit their full CV, cover letter (optional), two references, and two English writing samples to thijs_willems@sutd.edu.sg . We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
