Research Fellow

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN (UCD)

Applications are invited for a 2 years post of a UCD Research Fellow within UCD School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering.

This project is on the development and application of molecular-simulation methods for the simulation of interfaces involving liquids – with the liquids in contact with both solids and gases with nanoscale features and geometries, e.g., vacancies, bubbles, nanoscale ridges, droplets, etc.

Several projects are of interest to Prof. English’s research group under this important theme, embracing both theoretical and experimental approaches, and this project will contribute to molecular-simulation aspects of this. In particular, machine-learning approaches will be applied towards force-field development.

The purpose of the role is to deliver a specific research project. The role allows the Research Fellow the professional development opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for independent and self-directed research and scholarship and the management of a research team. The role allows the Fellow to assemble a portfolio of independent achievement and render themselves competitive for tenured academic positions or senior scientific roles in industry.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • DFT, tight-binding and empirical-potential molecular-dynamics simulation of nanoscale interfaces in contact with liquids
  • Non-equilibrium MD in external fields and perturbations of such surfaces/interfaces
  • Development of tailor-made force-fields from machine-learning approaches of such interfaces
  • Discussions with experimentalists probing such interfaces, as well as collaborative projects with them
