Research Fellow (104870-0922)

Fixed-term contract for 3 years, 1.0 FTE. To start as soon as possible.

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work as part of a research team that is developing new instrumentation and techniques, mainly in ultrasonics but also in electromagnetic measurements and inspection. The work will involve undertaking fundamental and applied research, usually in close collaboration with industrial partners, and will therefore require good communication and team working skills.

This is an exciting opportunity and a chance to work on a range of research projects in the fields of ultrasonics and non-destructive testing and to build a career straddling academia and industry. The post is designed for a postdoctoral researcher who already has some skills in sensor design and construction, preferably for ultrasonic measurements. You will be based in Warwick’s Centre for Industrial Ultrasonics, and the projects will try to solve real world problems whilst also undertaking world leading research. You will also receive training to widen your skill set, working on a range of different applications and sensor technologies You will work with industry, but will still have the opportunity to publish research papers and present at conferences.

You should ideally have experience in electronic circuit use and testing, while CAD and 3D printing skills would also be beneficial. You will have experience in applying those skills to designing and constructing ultrasonic transducers or related sensors. Experience in finite element modelling will be an advantage, and managing a small suite of modelling computers will be part of the duties of the successful candidate.

The work involves direct liaison with academic and industrial partners and the candidate should have some experience of managing a project and reporting to collaborators through both verbal and written means. The post also requires the candidate to perform fundamental research and have a track record of leading the writing of research papers and presentations.

You will work on different projects which can typically last between 1 – 12 months, and so you will need good organizational skills and experience of managing your time when working on more than one project simultaneously. This is an important role within a research group, aimed at generating real world impact from the group’s research activities and project portfolio. You will develop many new skills, working with researchers from a range of application fields. There will be the opportunity to publish research papers, attend research conferences and supervise research students.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure (£31,411). Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£32,348).
