Position Responsibilities

Position Summary The University of Idaho Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology, and Nematology seeks an entomologist to join the multi-disciplinary Research and Extension team at our PARMA R&E Center. This is a 12-month tenure track position is allocated 50% Research and 50% Extension at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will have primary research and Extension responsibility for integrated management of arthropod pests of specialty and seed crops. Area cropping systems are diverse and dynamic (includes hops, alfalfa, beets, beans, corn, mint and various seed crops). The research goal is to further our understanding of insect biology and ecology and to contribute to the development and implementation of integrated approaches to arthropod pest management in these and other specialty crops. The candidate will also be responsible for insect identification, oversight of the alfalfa leafcutter bee cocoon testing lab, developing management plans for insect pests of tree fruit crops or other crops as situations arise. The Extension goal is to provide leadership for the development, implementation, evaluation and reporting of Extension education programs relevant to integrated management of arthropod pests of specialty and seed crops. The successful candidate will collaborate with research and Extension faculty in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and with local, regional, national and international colleagues, present research seminars, participate in professional meetings and publish in peer-refereed journals. The successful candidate must also work with colleagues, commodity groups and others to educate producers and industry professionals about new integrated management technologies via workshops, printed and web-based publications, on-site field demonstrations and other outreach methods. The successful candidate will actively participate in graduate education by chairing and/or serving on graduate committees, supervising theses and dissertation research, and publishing results with graduate students. Extramural program support is expected to be pursued through federal grants, state agencies and private industry.
Specific research responsibilities include: Develop an internationally recognized, externally funded, collaborative research program that (1) investigates the biology and ecology of arthropod pests of specialty crops in Western Idaho and (2) develops integrated management solutions for those arthropods. Additional research interests in Landscape Ecology, Landscape Genetics, Vector Biology or other focus areas that complement those of current departmental faculty will be considered.
Specific Extension responsibilities include: (1) in response to clientele requests, develop, deliver, evaluate and report a multi-faceted Extension program that increases adoption of IPM strategies among commercial producers of specialty and tree fruit crops and their pest management advisors, (2) address the entomology needs of University of Idaho county Extension educators, including professional development and identifying and/or developing research-based resources for county Extension educators that can be used on the local level with the general public and support for insect identification and management and (3) assist in diagnostic activity related to entomology as needed.
Expectations include engagement with local stakeholders (agricultural consultants in hops, alfalfa, beans, beets, corn and mint, homeowners, local producers, agricultural county faculty at the University of Idaho and Oregon State University, etc.) and responsiveness to regional, state and national stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Degree Required Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications
  • Earned Ph.D. in Entomology or closely related field by December 30, 2022, with emphasis in integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Experience and training in fundamental and applied entomological research.
  • Experience working cooperatively and effectively with colleagues and clientele in research and Extension programs.
  • Experience publishing high impact applied research in scientific journals and Extension/outreach publications.
  • Experience providing clientele with current research-based information about pest management in oral and written venues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with specialty crop or field crop entomology research and Extension, preferably insect/arthropod pest biology and ecology in agricultural crops.
  • Ability to develop and deliver Extension programs to and with the County Extension Educators and other clientele that increase adoption of IPM methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding.
  • Strong publication record in research and Extension.
  • Interest or experience in training graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, both verbally and in writing.
