BPC – Battery Prototyping Center

Job Summary

The selected candidate will assist with customer projects involving slurry mixing, electrode coating, cell fabrication, and electrochemical testing.  Train students and customers in operation of BPC equipment. Provide customer reports, analysis, and data summaries. Maintain laboratory equipment, lab safety, and waste management (MSDS, RIT EH&S, PPE, inventory, etc.).  Assist with battery training seminars for industry.  Attend conference and tradeshows to promote RIT and BPC. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provides basic routine assistance in manipulating, computing, organizing, and/or analyzing data.
  • May use a variety of specialized analytical software. Provides basic routine assistance in the design of systems, experiments, processes, databases, programming, products and/or equipment.
  • Assists in routine evaluation of research/engineering methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives.
  • Operates field, office, laboratory and/or shop equipment used in support of research/engineering projects.
  • Assists with set up of experiments.
  • Collects and logs samples, specimens, measurements and other scientific/engineering data collections through observation, experimentation, interviewing, standard procedures or electronic equipment.
  • Maintains and organizes detailed records of studies conducted and enters data into electronic databases.
  • Prepares reports documenting findings and procedures used and assist in writing reports by conducting literature searches and background research.
  • Trains staff and students on proper use of equipment and instrumentation and other technical procedures.
  • Maintains inventories and supplies.
  • May provide laboratory support tasks such as ordering supplies, safety checks, coordinating and scheduling of lab usage, assist in developing and disseminating standard operating procedures for lab, etc.
  • May perform routine maintenance (assembly, installation, tests, calibration, repair) on standard equipment and systems, or work with manufactures/vendors to modify and upgrade equipment and fixtures as technology and needs evolve.
  • Performs equipment and tool audits and inspections.
  • May supervise and/or provide work direction to students.
  • Participate in research team meetings to discuss project progress and findings.

Required Qualifications

Experience/Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a specified field of science, engineering, or related field OR an Associate’s Degree in a specified field of science, engineering, or related field and two years of battery related experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of processes, methods, and procedures related to scientific or engineering fields. Knowledge of data collection procedures, data entry procedures and computerized spreadsheets and databases. Ability to take precise measurements and maintain accurate records. Ability to interpret data and manipulate data to produce charts and graphs. Understanding of battery materials, prototyping, cell manufacturing, and testing.  Successful applicants will demonstrate thorough experimental design, development, and analytical skills. Experience maintaining accurate scientific records, data interpretation, and reporting is preferred, along with strong written and verbal communications skills. Ability to repair and maintain laboratory equipment and follow laboratory safety procedures and protocols.

Office of the VP for Research – Battery Prototyping Center

The RIT Battery Prototyping Center (BPC) is a state-of-the-art research and rapid prototyping facility focused on the development and qualification of emerging energy storage technologies through a partnership between NY-Battery Energy and Storage Technologies (NY-BEST) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).  The BPC works closely with university and industry partners to expedite the scale up of new chemistries and materials for increasing power density, energy density, cycle life, and safety. The BPC assists in the processing of battery slurries, electrode preparation, and the fabrication of commercial quality pouch and cylindrical cells. The BPC aims to become nationally recognized for the manufacturing of high quality prototype batteries, cutting edge research in next generation battery technologies, and minimizing life-cycle impacts of the battery manufacturing process.
