General Notes
This position ends 12-months from initial hire date. Possible renewals contingent upon job performance, progress towards research goals, and funding acquisition.
This position is security sensitive; criminal background checks conducted on selected candidate. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant clearing background requirements.
Purpose
The purpose of the position is to assist our collection manager and curator in activities relating to the regular functioning of the fish collection and ancillary projects. The location is primarily in the University’s ichthyology collection (https://biodiversity.utexas.edu/collections/ichthyology ). Activities include, but are not limited to, working on spreadsheets/databases, specimen preparation, specimen labeling, shelving, preparing loans, writing, managing volunteers, fieldwork, fish specimen ID, coordination with collaborators etc. Funding will currently last for two years, but we hope to be able to extend beyond that.
Responsibilities
Assist in the maintenance of the department’s website and social media.
Monitor environmental conditions in collection.
Provide/assist with data/specimen requests and answer questions for researchers and collaborative organizations/institutions.
Oversee student workers and volunteers and provide them with appropriate training in safety regulations and lab procedures.
Contribute to reports, manuscripts, exhibits and occasionally present posters or orally at professional meetings.
Catalog, label, and shelve fish specimens using Specify as a management tool.
Ensure proper maintenance of existing teaching and research collections.
Organize and interact with partners on projects with other institutions and agencies (i.e. Texas Parks and Wildlife, etc.)
Order supplies and manage budgets.
Fieldwork, collecting fish in TX waters using various methods
Required Qualifications
A bachelor’s of science degree. One or more years working in a museum or lab setting or fieldwork experience. Excellent attention to detail in the lab and while under sometimes uncomfortable field conditions. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to carry heavy equipment. Ability to sometimes work long hours at a computer and in the field. Basic experience in natural history collections, data management, spreadsheets, knowledge of regional aquatic fauna, etc.
Driving Required
This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$40,000 – $45,000

Work Shift
Experimental protocols may require a non-standard work schedule. Work may involve long days and short weekends, working evenings, morning and/or weekends. This position is a mixture of field and laboratory-based investigation. It may require some overnight travel to field sites and work outside in all seasons.
