The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Office of Research & Development has an opening for a Research Engineer (Medical Device) who will support the development of University technologies for commercialization, academic research and start-up companies. The research engineer will work on designing, fabrication and testing of new devices in a medical device lab and contribute to the development of the lab.

Essential Duties:

  • Work with UMB inventors to design, fabricate, and test medical device prototypes under the guidance of UMB OTT
  • Perform testing of medical device utilizing prototypes
  • Maintain local lab equipment
  • Generate lab SOPs, test protocols and tools, and provide lab support as needed
  • Advise on new equipment and technologies to increase prototyping and testing capabilities at UMB
  • Provide guidance and design advice to those who are interested in using the lab for rapid prototyping
  • Attend simulated use testing (e.g., animal or cadaver) to facilitate device development
  • Develop partnerships with external resources to increase development capabilities
  • Maintain concept and prototype design history to facilitate intellectual property protection
  • Work with UMB faculty inventors and OTT to develop educational programs (e.g., instructional videos) that address unmet needs in areas of interest to inventors (i.e., CAD)
  • Work closely with University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) to increase workflow and strengthen and expand relationship between Fischell Institute and UM Ventures, Baltimore.
  • Utilize engineering equipment and resources at Fischell Institute to design, fabricate, and test prototype medical devices
  • Work with UMB OTT and UMB faculty inventors to continually expand prototyping services available on UMB campus
  • Serve as a representative of UMB OTT at medical device technology and UMB associated events
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. (Discipline in mechanical, biomedical/bioengineering, or electrical engineering preferred.)
Experience: Four (4) years of related experience.
Preferred Experience: Experience with various modes of design and rapid prototyping, including with standard software packages (e.g., Dassault SolidWorks, AutoDesk Fusion360, MathWorks Matlab).
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of computer programming (e.g., Python, C++, R) as necessary to facilitate design, building, and testing of hardware prototypes. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to quickly learn different disciplines of medical research and apply to technical development. Ability to apply technical skills within commercial and entrepreneurial framework. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Hiring Range: Low $70,000s to low $80,000s; commensurate with education and experience
