Research Engineer II/III, Computer Vision

Northeastern University

About the Opportunity

The Kostas Research Institute (KRI), on Northeastern University’s Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM), focuses on research and applications to national security challenges. Our diverse geospatial AI (Artificial Intelligence) initiatives and prototype development have a current focus on force readiness and force protection to drive geospatial data to decisions and action. We work in cross-functional teams, exploring how geospatial data, data science, AI/deep learning, computer vision, and customer needs can create new products and insights. Diverse problems require a diverse group of minds. We are seeking a talented, motivated Computer Vision Scientist /Engineer to join our growing team and collaborate with other engineers, coops, PhDs, and Professors as well as work independently. As a member of our technical staff, you will be working in our private cloud and/or high-performance computing environment to ingest a wide variety of data, run advanced machine learning algorithms, and apply data science principles to understand the digital world by building computer-vision-backed APIs (Application Programming Interface) on top of data.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, adapt, and extend KRI’s CV (Computer Vision) and ML/AI technology
  • Develop new CV and ML (Machine Learning) models for 1D, 2D and 3-D data sources – familiarity with geospatial data, including LiDAR, HSI (Hyperspectral Imaging) a plus
  • Keen interest in statistical behavior of data and algorithms to improve existing CV model performance, e.g., for higher precision and recall metrics
  • Deploy models in our HPC (High Performance Computing) environment through collaboration with extended team.
  • Iterate algorithms to continuously improve performance under a variety of conditions
  • Interest in keeping data ingest and processing pipelines up-and-running within security parameters of ITAR/EAR and CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) space
  • Participate in small and tactical development teams using agile development principles, sprint planning, and standups etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong self-motivation, demonstrated ability for independent work
  • Execute to contract deliverables, engage in technical exchange meetings (and extended academic discussions with multiple university partners), and contribute to monthly reports
  • Contribute whitepapers toward proposal development initiatives, with associated research submitted to relevant conferences
  • Potential for supervisory role for mentoring junior engineers and coops

Qualifications:

  • PhD or MS degree, or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (physics, mathematics, computer science, operations research, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate complex data science concepts and results in an understandable manner
  • Demonstrable examples working with image data and noisy datasets that may have sparsity in some dimension (e.g., spatially, temporally)
  • Excellent coding skills (especially python with a solid familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, pandas)
  • Experience with git, GitHub, containers, and Unix/Linux
  • Example(s) of designed and trained CV models and a dedication to continuous integration and testing
  • Ability to obtain government security clearance required
