Research Engineer

DTU Physics at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as researcher engineer in the field of x-ray imaging within CO2 storage, geology and offshore technology.

The position is part of a collaboration between the 3D x-ray imaging centre (3DIM) and Danish Offshore Technology Centre (DOTC). 3DIM comprises 20 people, performing basic and applied research with x-rays in a wide range of fields, including CO2 capture and storage. The 3DIM centre inaugurated a 1000 m^3 lab facility at DTU in 2021 and will start operating a beamline at MAX IV summer 2023. 3DIM hosts a national research infrastructure DANFIX with more than 50 annual research projects using the facility. The 3D Imaging Centre also supports instrumentation and software developments.

DTU Offshore (Danish Offshore Technology Centre) is Denmark’s national R&D centre for offshore technologies and holds a central position in the energy transition. It develops research-based technology solutions for the offshore industry in the North Sea. The Centre’s research encompasses carbon storage, digital solutions for the offshore sector, produced water management, well and platform maintenance, recovery of remaining oil and gas resources, and efficient and responsible abandonment of depleted oil and gas fields.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will oversee and support x-ray tomography activities at DOTC and 3DIM. This will involve optimization of hardware and software/data analysis protocols for CT scanning of rock materials both in dry state and with the material saturated with fluids. The experimental work will also include setting up the system for x-ray scanning during flow experiments. The equipment at DOTC includes a micro-CT scanner and a sub-micro-CT scanner. Activities on CO2 injection and storage involve experiments investigating the changes occurring at pore scale when rocks are brought into contact with CO2 and carbonated water, while other experimental activities may involve power-to-X scenarios with other gases and fluid flow in geothermal reservoirs. The candidate will work closely with postdoc researchers and PhD students at DOTC who are working on various projects relating to flow in porous rock material and should facilitate exploiting the synergy between 3DIM and DOTC. She or he will participate in group activities both places, with the physical facilities being located within 500 m from each other. As part of the task at the 3DIM the candidate will support user projects not only within the area of CO2 storage, geology, and offshore technology, together with the rest of the team connected to DANFIX. We anticipate that the candidate takes new initiatives within the field, leading to grants, an increased network or commercial activities.

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc,
  • be an expert in data acquisition and data analysis using X-ray imaging techniques,
  • be a team player with an ability to foster the collaboration between groups,
  • be motivated by both individual and team accomplishments. Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and take personal responsibility for your work.

A background within geophysics, CO2 storage and/or experience with studies of rocks using tomography is a plus.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Research impact and experience.
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Documented experience in experimental X-ray tomography
  • Documented experience in data analysis for X-ray tomography techniques.
  • Collaboration skills
  • Communication skills
