Applications are invited for a Research Associate position to work on a research project implementing environmental behaviour change interventions in hospital operating rooms.  

The successful candidate will join the Project Team, consisting of researchers from the Dyson School of Design Engineering and the Department of Surgery and Cancer (Faculty of Medicine) at Imperial. The research will be in collaboration with The Global Health Innovation, the Grantham Institute, The Royal College of Surgeons and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. 

The candidate will design, implement and evaluate environmental behaviour change interventions at Imperial Healthcare Trust operating rooms.  They will be required to interview and engage surgeons and other stakeholders throughout the research project. Dissemination of the findings within healthcare systems and academia is an important part of the role. 

Duties and responsibilities

Key responsibilities: 

  • Help the research team design environmental behavioural interventions for the operating rooms using participatory design methods, behaviour change theories and techniques. 
  • Coordinate the implementation of the environmental behavioural interventions in operating room settings and evaluate the findings. 
  • Create strong relationships between the research team and the sustainability champions at the  NHS Trust. 

Research Duties:  

  • To take initiatives in the design, planning and implementation of environmental behavioural interventions in operating rooms 
  • To identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus for the implementation and evaluation of the behavioural interventions 
  • To collect data from the behavioural intervention trials and evaluate the findings 
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings 
  • To write reports and papers for submission to research sponsors and academic journals 
  • To present findings to colleagues, stakeholders and at conferences 
  • To maintain a highly organised and accurate record of experimental work 
  • To collaborate with other allied scientists within Imperial College and elsewhere in London and UK, as appropriate 

Any other duties as may be deemed reasonable by the Head of the group as well as the Head of Division/Department/Section 

Essential requirements

Essential (E) and desirable (D) requirements

  • A PhD in Psychology, Human Factors, Behavioural Science or closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience. (E)
  • Experience in participatory design methods (e.g., interviews, surveys). (E)
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods. (E)
  • Experience in designing, co-designing and implementing interventions. (D)
  • Strong interest in sustainability. (E)
