Research Associate or Research Fellow

University of Leicester

About the role

Highly motivated postdoctoral candidates are invited to apply for postdoctoral fellowships at the Stoneygate Centre for Excellence in Empathic Healthcare. The roles will primarily involve doing research that underpins an innovative and evidence-based empathy curriculum for medical students. The successful candidates will join a vibrant community of empathy researchers and teachers at the University of Leicester and will be led by the director and international leader in empathy research, Professor Jeremy Howick.

The Stoneygate Centre for Excellence in Empathic Healthcare has been founded based on a £10m investment by the Stoneygate Trust and the University of Leicester. They have convened a team   of multidisciplinary researchers and educators to pioneer a robust new approach to medical education and training that positions empathy at the heart of healthcare delivery.

The Centre for Empathy will research and deliver world leading empathy training for both the pre-clinical and clinical phases of medical education. This will be done in an evidence-based way so that it can be easily integrated into General Medical Council (GMC) guidance for medical school curricula, as well as related international guidance. Researchers at the Centre will also develop continuing professional development courses based on this excellent research. The Centre also has an international advisory board as well as both national and international partners with whom they collaborate.

In addition to conducting the research, the Grade 8 fellow will be expected to manage more junior researchers, and develop their own ideas to promote the Centre’s mission.

About you

You will be expected to take a leading role in developing and carrying out the research programme. The project will require strong skills in clinical epidemiology (including systematic reviews). Experience with component analyses, qualitative research, and teaching is also highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, and experience conducting and publishing their research.

The Grade 8 Fellow will be expected to have a larger number of publications in mid- to high-tier journals. A high level of proficiency in English and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential requirements for this position.

Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Jeremy Howick, Centre Director, on [email protected]
