Research Associate, Latin America Studies

Position description

The Council’s Studies Program is one of the country’s largest foreign policy think tanks with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program’s aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

The research associate will report to two fellows within the Latin America Studies program focused on rule of law, corruption and organized crime, elections, constitutional change, and U.S.-Latin America relations.

This full-time position is based in CFR’s New York City office on a hybrid basis. CFR currently defines hybrid status as working at least three days a week onsite, with Tuesdays and Thursdays considered institutional anchor days where all staff are required to be onsite.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

      • Provide administrative support to the fellows, including handling correspondence, scheduling, making travel arrangements, and responding to requests for information,
      • Research specific areas for talks, articles, and other publications; assisting with the proofreading and editing of articles, book chapters, and other written material,
      • Assist the fellow with social media outreach, including publishing on the website, and/or using social media applications such as X, Google+, etc., as needed,
      • Track news and data sources,
      • Coordinate events, including preparing invitations, travel arrangements, corresponding with speakers and presiders, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution, and providing other logistical support,
      • Assist in managing budgets, including preparing budgets and tracking monthly statements, monitoring grant information and writing reports and requests, and preparing vouchers for reimbursement,
      • Provide support across departmental lines and for other fellows, upon request.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

      • Bachelor’s degree in international relations. political science, economics, and/or Latin America studies, with high academic credentials
      • 1+ year related research and/or administrative experience

Related Skills and Other Requirements

      • Strong understanding of political economy
      • Reading, writing, and speaking fluency in the Spanish language
      • A published, non-academic writing sample is a plus
      • Working knowledge of Portuguese a plus
      • Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and internet research
      • Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
      • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail

Compensation and Benefits

  • The full-time annual compensation range for this position is $55,000-$58,000 depending on experience.
