Research Associate in Particle Phenomenology (QCD)

Applications are invited for an STFC-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate position to join the University of Manchester Particle Physics Group to work on the phenomenology of QCD. The successful applicant should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in particle physics or a related discipline and research interests which match those of the group.​​​​​​​

The post will be available from October 2023 for a period of two years and is renewable for a third year subject to satisfactory performance.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute significantly to the research activities of the group in the area of QCD phenomenology. This includes topics such as analytic resummation techniques in QCD, non-global and super-leading logarithms, QCD factorisation, developing connections between resummation and parton showers, physics of parton showers, development of Monte Carlo event generators, small-x QCD, double parton scattering, higher-order perturbative QCD calculations, jet physics and jet substructure.

The successful applicant will be part of the Manchester particle physics group which consists of eight academic staff members including Mrinal Dasgupta, Jeff Forshaw, Jonathan Gaunt , Mike Seymour, (with research interests mainly in QCD), Eleni Vryonidou (QCD & BSM phenomenology), Richard Battye (Cosmology), Apostolos Pilaftsis (mainly BSM phenomenology) and Peter Millington (QFT & particle cosmology). We also host a Stephen Hawking research fellow, Stefan Schacht (flavour physics).

The successful applicant will also be able to benefit from direct interaction with the Manchester experimental particle physics group.

As this role involves research at a postgraduate level, applicants who are not an EEA national or a national of an exempt country and who will require sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route of the UK Visas and Immigration’s (UKVI) Points Based System in order to take up the role, will be required to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate and will need to obtain this prior to making any official visa application UKVI)
