Research Associate in algebraic geometry and representation theory (fixed-term post)

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Associate to undertake research into algebraic geometry and representation theory with Prof. A. Craw (Principal Applicant) and other members of the project ‘Cox rings and quiver moduli spaces’ funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

You will contribute to an ambitious and coherent research programme that aims to further our understanding of many quiver moduli spaces, including Nakajima quiver varieties and moduli of McKay quiver representations. This programme will touch on birational geometry, representation theory and invariant theory, and there will be an important computational aspect to the project. You will be expected to disseminate the results in leading academic journals and conferences. You will also be encouraged to teach one full lecture course during your time in Bath.

You must have (or soon obtain) a PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics or Physics and demonstrable experience of research in birational geometry, quiver moduli spaces, representation theory, or a related topic. You will be a highly motivated individual who will contribute well to the research project itself and to the department as a whole. The position carries an additional £3,000/year to fund travel and accommodation expenses that are incurred in attending conferences and research visits. Experience in using computer software to tackle research problems is highly desirable.

This is a fixed-term contract for a period of up to 24 months, beginning in March 2023.

For further information and an informal discussion about the role please contact Professor Alastair Craw ([email protected] ), however, please submit your application via the University website including:

  • an up-to-date curriculum vitae;
  • a one-page research statement describing your research interests, as well as your experience in the research areas relevant to the position.

As a member of the project team, you will join the research group in Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The group includes more than a dozen academics and a similar number of PhD students, with expertise in algebraic geometry, differential geometry, representation theory, number theory and group theory.

The Department itself has over 70 academic staff representing all areas of Mathematics. Our Department emphasises the unity of Mathematics and there are strong interactions between research groups. This interaction is supported by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa), which currently employs over 70 PhD students, with an annual intake of 10-20 research students. The Department is committed to providing a supportive research environment, aiming to bring about positive cultural change in diversifying recruitment of early-career academics.
