Job Summary

A  Staff Research Associate (SRA) position is available in the Drs. Bastian/ Chen laboratory in the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. The SRA will work to support research on melanoma by performing a broad range of molecular cell biology experiments including cell culture, Western blotting, cloning, isolation of DNA and RNA from tissues and cells, omics studies, mass spectrometry, and mouse breeding, genotyping and drug treatment. A limited amount of time will be devoted to day-to-day laboratory management including maintenance of core laboratory equipment.

Department Description

The Department of Dermatology – School of Medicine, is responsible for a broad range of patient care, teaching, research and public service responsibilities. The Department provides medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows in the School of Medicine, with programs in research, patient care, teaching and public service. The mission of our group is to understand, measure and improve the health of patients with chronic skin disease, as well as train future leaders in the field of patient-oriented research. The Department is comprised of four distinct clinical sub-units located at the Ambulatory Care Center, San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion and the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. The Department consists of 31 full-time faculty, 40 researchers, 40 staff, 13 residents and 6 clinical fellows. These operations are administered through various dispersed, interdependent sub-units, which are coordinated through a centralized Administrative Core.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Background in biology.
  • Previous experience working with tissue culture, western blot and PCR, RT-PCR.
  • Previous experience working with mice.
  • Ability to follow lab Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ability to communicate in writing and in person.
  • Must be well organized, able to multitask and set priorities.
  • Detail oriented
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with mouse xenograft, FACS, mouse luciferase imaging, lentivirus and DNA molecular cloning.
