Research Associate (Developing extension to the Wiener-Hopf methods for lattice acoustic wedges)

The advertised post is for a Research Associate to work with Dr Anastasia Kisil within the Waves in Complex Continua Group in the Department of Mathematics at Manchester. The appointee will develop new analytical methods to solve problems in acoustics. In particular, the Wiener-Hopf method will be adapted and extended to solve a wider class of equations which arise from study of a 2-D lattice structure. The study of 2-D lattice structures are motivated by the growing interest in metamaterials. There has been extensive research into how waves propagate within a metamaterial (periodic materials) but there are substantially fewer results about the way waves interact with the edges of the metamaterials. These results are important, have many applications in noise reduction and naturally build upon the mathematical methods used for canonical scattering problems. There is also a possibility to explore the aeroacoustic uses of these metamaterials. There is substantial flexibility within the project so it can be adapted to suit the strengths of the appointee. This post is funded via Kisil’s Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research and Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Fellowships.

The Waves in Complex Continua Group has broad research interests in metamaterials, wave propagation and scattering in fluids and solids with applications including aero and hydroacoustics, elastodynamics, and industrial and biological composite materials.  Other activities in physical applied mathematics within the Department of Mathematics cover areas such as high Reynolds number and experimental fluid dynamics, fluid structure interactions, solid mechanics, granular materials and inverse problems.

Applicants should have, or be working towards, a PhD level qualification in applied mathematics or a related discipline. Experience of research in the field of mathematical analysis of wave scattering is essential, and some knowledge of numerical implementation would be highly advantageous. No prior knowledge of analysis of metamaterial is required. The appointee must have knowledge of skills commensurate with the intended analysis and should be capable of working under their own initiative. The appointed individual will work as part of a larger team so excellent communication and organisational skills are required.
