Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to work on an exciting project in the field of Neuroscience.

The post, funded by a Wings for Life Foundation grant to the Di Giovanni laboratory, aims to investigate the molecular and cellular underpinnings of regenerative failure after nerve and spinal cord injuries. Exciting recent research developments have placed the role of axonal signalling and transcriptional regulation at the centre of the capacity of axons to re-grow after spinal cord injury. These include work published from the Di Giovanni laboratory. Given that neurological recovery and axonal regeneration are not possible following a spinal injury, understanding how the re-growth of injured axons is controlled is key to enhancing axonal regeneration and potentially functional recovery. Axonal signalling and metabolic control seem important for modulating the complex gene expression program necessary for the regrowth of an axon. However, the role of environmental factors in signalling and metabolic pathways in axonal regeneration remains obscure.

Duties and responsibilities

• You will carry out research programmes in molecular and cellular underpinnings of regenerative failure after nerve and spinal cord injuries. You will be expected to generate data of high quality that can be submitted for publication to high-profile refereed journals and to attract external research funding.
• You will take the initiative in the planning of research, whilst directing the work of the small research teams. You will motivate and support individuals helping to identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data.
• Whilst conducting data analysis, you will always ensure the validity and reliability of data, maintain accurate and complete records, producing reports for research sponsors. Data will be presented to both colleagues, and at conferences, promoting the reputation of the group, the department and college. Developing key contacts and research collaborations both within the wider community and within the college are essential.

Essential requirements

• PhD in neuroscience, cellular/molecular biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £41,694 – £44,888 per annum.

• You should have practical experience within a research environment and using techniques related to neurobiology and immunology. Experience with in vivo research is desirable, but not essential. It is essential that you can work independently and collaboratively. You should have knowledge of gene expression analysis and practical experience working in a busy laboratory.

This post is full-time, fixed term for 2 years, however there is the possibility of an extension for a further year

based at the Hammersmith Campus.
