The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Associate to serve as a member of Dr. Yi Xu’s laboratory team in the Center for Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. Job Summary:
The Research Associate performs independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Performs experiments, prepares proposals for funding agencies, operates research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Two years of relevant professional experience. (Master’s degree is equivalent to two years of experience.)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others is required.

  • Must have the coordination and dexterity to perform laboratory techniques.

  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, or cell biology.

  • Laboratory research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry or cell biology are preferred.

  • Proficiency in cloning, PCR, recombinant protein expression, western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence is preferred.

  • Experience with animal studies is preferred.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.

  • Strong interest in laboratory research, with ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects.

  • Keep detailed records of data. Use computers and laboratory equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, technical evaluation and presentation of research experiments and results. Summarize results for inclusion in scientific publications and presentations.

  • Conduct literature searches and reviews, attend courses and lectures. Participate in weekly lab meetings within the center and other departments. Participate in joint projects involving faculty, lab personnel and graduate students. Supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research. Assist in the preparation of proposals to funding agencies.

  • Install, operate and/or repair research equipment. Assist with maintaining lab equipment, stocks, and ordering supplies and equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
