Research Associate

Imperial College London

Job description
Job summary

The Clinical Language and Cognition (CLC) group at Imperial College London, led by Dr Fatemeh Geranmayeh ,  is seeking a postdoctoral researcher who is enthusiastic about advancing the frontiers in real-time adaptive cognitive task optimisation in patients with cognitive impairment. In particular, the purpose of the role is to apply machine learning techniques in real-time to optimise task selection when patients undergo cognitive testing after stroke.  This will be based largely on data already acquired through an exciting and ongoing study IC3 , which remotely monitors cognition after stroke. Such remote online cognitive testing builds on the success of the Great British Intelligence test to acquire cognitive data remotely and at a large scale, from patients and healthy controls, using browser-based assessments. In addition, the group uses structural and functional MRI brain imaging to predict the cognitive trajectories post-stroke as collected through the IC3 study; A strong background in machine learning applications is essential. Background in cognitive neuroscience and brain image processing is desirable. The role will be additionally supported by key collaborators Professor Adam Hampshire and Professor Robert Leech .

Duties and responsibilities

  • To take initiatives in the planning of research methods and build a structure and framework in which to perform real-time task optimisation.
  • To conduct data analysis
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
  • To write reports for submission to research sponsors
  • To provide guidance to staff and students
  • Contribute to bids for research grants
  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary
  • To develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community
  • To promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College
  • To conduct and plan own scientific work with appropriate supervision
  • To maintain highly organised and accurate record of experimental Work.

Essential requirements

  • Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Cognitive Neuroscience, Computer Science or a closely related discipline
  • Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Cognitive Neuroscience, Computer Science or a closely related discipline
  • Knowledge of cognitive neuroscience, machine learning applications, computational modelling.
  • Practical experience with programming languages such as Python.
  • Knowledge of brain MRI imaging data analysis would be desirable but not essential.
