Position Focus:
The focus of our research is to understand mechanisms of resistance and tolerance to emerging viruses across age groups and we use biology techniques and protocols focused on immunology and virology. This position is focused on supporting research projects and involves the conduction of experiments to study several aspects of immune response post viral infections. In addition to pursuing an independent research project, responsibilities include work that will maintain a small laboratory. The selected candidate will join a dynamic and exciting research team and this position will allow the candidate to build their laboratory and scientific skills.
Essential duties: Human samples processing: PBMCs and plasma isolation and storage. Immunology: Design, prepare, conduct, and analyze complex experiments. Perform high parameter flow cytometry of tissue-derived cell suspensions flow cytometry, perform ELISA, antibody neutralization assays, viral plaque assays, sequencing, and imaging. Virology: preparation of stocks, isolation, and titration of virus.
General Laboratory: Prepare stocks of some laboratory solutions and help to keep the lab outfitted with supplies and reagents. Data Records: Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. Keep clear and accurate records of data collected during experimentation. Data Analysis: Performs analyses and interpretation of the data where appropriate. Reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning. Interacts with the PI, other lab members, and EHS officers to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. Interacts with external contacts such as staff at biotechnology and reagent companies to consult on research methods.
Animal Care: Help manage a colony of transgenic and genetically modified mice. Duties include weaning mice of breeding cages, tagging mice and obtaining tail biopsies. Molecular Biology: Genetically type mice by DNA gel electrophoresis of PCR products.
Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biological Science or another directly related scientific field; 1+ years of hands-on experience working in a biology research lab.
