The Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a two-year Research Associate position. The Research Associate will be working under the direct supervision of Professor Geoff Dancy to assist in managing a Global Affairs Canada-sponsored project called Transitional Justice Evaluation Tools (TJET), which engages with human rights-based approaches to sustainable peace and democratization. The Research Associate will direct this project in coordination with Dancy and co-primary investigators at Harvard University. The Research Associate’s primary responsibilities include training and managing a team of five undergraduate students for two years, conducting analysis of transitional justice data for policy research, assisting with database and coding updates, taking the lead on website maintenance, providing technical support in the building of a transitional justice expert network, and planning travel and conferences.

EDUCATION:

• PhD in Political Science, with a specialization in human rights (completed by the start of the appointment), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum 3 years experience working on human rights & measurement
• Experience handling quantitative datasets
• Experience building database pipelines
• Experience conducting publishable research
• Experience team-building and overseeing research assistants
• Experience producing deliverables by specific deadlines

SKILLS:

• Ability to code in R, Python, and HTML.
• Ability to manage a large database.
• Ability to construct statistical models to test hypotheses.
• Superior communication and organizational skills.
• Self-motivated with an ability to multi-task.
• Ability to lead a project and co-ordinate research teams.
• Ability to test hypotheses in a social science framework
